Submission for the Superstition TTRPG Game Jam and Indiepocalypse Issue #49

"50 years ago, a town became a lake. Tonight, we sit beside it and summon horrors from the fire."

Welcome to Camp Fontana!

You and your fellow players are campers from Cabin #3. You've just snuck out from under the nose of your snoring counselor to build a midnight fire pit in the middle of the extremely secluded and entirely uninhabited Appalachian wilderness. You have a bag of marshmallows, disposable cameras, and spiral notebooks full of scary stories to tell. What could go wrong?!

To play, you take turns going around the circle narrating (or rather, GM'ing) scary short stories set on these very campgrounds. Your fellow campers will choose a character to play in your tale and attempt to survive til the very end. Rinse and repeat.

Every time someone dies in a story for the first time, the fire dims slightly and something jarring happens in the real world. If everyone dies at least once before the end of the last story, the fire goes out just in time for you to see something lunge from the treeline.

Some things should never be spoken aloud in Appalachia...

Notable Features

  • Everybody GM's, Everybody plays
  • Recursive role-playing: You play as a camper playing a character, so if your acting skills aren't great, play it up and be hammy! After all, this isn't a theater camp.
  • Supernaturally simple checks: To do anything risky, just roll a d4! If your character is good or bad at it, roll with advantage or disadvantage, respectively.
  • Great to play around a fire!

Inspirations

  • The Midnight Club
  • Are You Afraid of the Dark?
  • The Suite Life of Zack & Cody: The Ghost of Suite 613 (lmao)
  • Appalachian TikTokers
  • Camp Folkanore (if you know, you know)
  • My 4 years of fond childhood summer camp memories :)
